Pros & Cons of Asphalt Shingles

MHI Roofing in Pittsburgh, PA

When it comes to roofing materials, asphalt shingles are the tried-and-true classic.  They have been the most popular roofing material for decades.  However, in recent decades, other options like metal or slate have been gaining in popularity. This raises an important question; why should you choose asphalt shingles for your home’s roof? Take a look at this guide to learn about the pros and cons of asphalt shingles and find out if they are the right option for your home.

Pros:

Economical: When it comes to roofing materials, asphalt shingles are the most economical option. If replacing your roof on a budget is a primary concern, asphalt shingles are your best option.

Longevity: Asphalt shingles have a variable lifespan depending on the quality of the material.  On the lower end, some shingles may only last 15 years.  However, if you are willing to spend a bit more for a higher quality shingle, there are some asphalt shingles that are rated to last for 50 years.  While other options like metal, or slate, can last close to a century, they are far more expensive and if you take good care of your asphalt shingle roof you may not need to worry about replacing it again.

Easy Installation: If you can find a contractor who knows how to replace a roof, there is a very good chance they know how to install asphalt shingles.  Less brittle than slate, and with a simpler installation process than metal, asphalt shingles are the standard of the roofing industry and their ease of installation reflects that.

Aesthetics: Due to their wide availability, asphalt shingles are available in a variety of colors and styles.  If you have a particular vision for your home, your best bet for fulfilling your goals are asphalt shingles.

Cons:

Environmental Impact: Asphalt shingles are unfortunately the least environmentally friendly roofing option.  The manufacturing process involves the use of fossil fuels, which makes them an unsustainable option.  Furthermore, they comprise an considerable portion of the United States yearly waste, with some inspections putting it as high as 5% of total yearly waste.  Other options, like metal or slate, are recyclable and natural, meaning when it comes to environmental impact, there are better options.

Maintenance: Asphalt roofs require periodic maintenance, including checking your shingles and granules to make sure they’re secure, examining your flashing to ensure water isn’t seeping into your roof deck or frame, and checking for moss or algae growth which could damage your shingles if left.

Overall, asphalt shingles are a wonderful option for homeowner’s roofs with a couple of drawbacks.  However, they will protect your home and increase your curb appeal, and for that reason we recommend them to our homeowners.
