A Quick Guide On Roof Fire Ratings

A Quick Guide On Roof Fire Ratings

When it comes to roof repair and replacement, you might be considering an unrated material to cut costs. However, an unrated roof means it doesn’t even pass the requirements for the lowest rated materials, which means it will hardly give any fire resistance. These types of roofing materials are usually not accommodated by building codes, which is why it’s better to avoid them instead.

A Quick Guide On Roof Fire Ratings

If you want your new roof to be worth the investment, you’ll need to consider the fire rating as you’re looking for roofing materials for your project. They’re usually categorized in three ratings, and we’ve explained them below.

Class A

Roofs that have this rating are the preferred choice for any type of home, but it’s especially recommended if you live in areas that are prone to wildfires. Only Class A roofs can withstand a burning brand measuring 12″x 12″ and weighing 2,000 grams and last around two to four hours before it gets ignited. Class A roofs can also experience a maximum flame spread of six feet and endure 15 cycles of a gas flame turned on and off.

If you’re interested in installing a roof that has a class A fire rating, our roofing experts recommend DaVinci® composite roofing products. Not only will it give your home that extra curb appeal, but you’ll also benefit from its high resistance from the fire.

Class B

This rating is effective against moderate fire exposures, which is common in pressure-treated shakes and shingles. A roof that has this rating can experience a maximum flame spread of eight feet and last about an hour before ignition. It can also resist eight cycles of a gas flame turned on and off and withstand a burning brand measuring 6? by 6? and weighing 500 grams.

Class C

This is the lowest of the three ratings as it only provides light fire protection. It can experience a maximum flame spread of 13 feet, last 20 minutes before ignition, and withstand a burning brand measuring 1.5″ x 1.5″ and weighing 1/4 gram. It can only resist three cycles of a gas flame turned on and off.
